The Side Dish
The side dish seems to have disappeared as of late. When cooking, I tend to make a couple of dishes, veggies, meat, starch... but it seems rare that I create just a classic side dish, like buttered corn or green beans and almonds.
As a little girl, this was the pinnacle of any meal - a large steaming bowl of corn. Not just ANY corn, but peaches and cream frozen corn with a little butter and salt. We had it rarely, usually just at Grandma's house, but those were very special occasions like Christmas or Easter.
I attempted to recreate this moment a little while ago, dumping some frozen peaches and cream corn in a pot with a little butter and a sprinkle of salt before serving. All the ingredients were there, but it was just not the same as Grandma's.
What were your favourite childhood foods?
